St. Leo Faculty

Mrs. Detwiler- Principal

I attended St. Leo School and Elk County Catholic H.S. I later received a B.S. in Elementary Education from Villa Maria College in Erie. After Seventeen years of teaching, I received my Masters in Education from Duquesne University; certified as both an elementary and secondary principal. I also completed other graduate work at St. Bonaventure and Gannon Universities. I was a classroom teacher for over 25 years and have been principal for 12 years. I have worked on the Assessment Team for the Diocese of Erie for 17 years. I also currently serve on the Board of Directors for the Elk County Catholic School System.

I'm an avid reader; two of my favorite books are "Nineteen Minutes" and "The Secret Life of Bees". I also enjoy watching old game shows and classic TV shows. I am the grandmother of four boys: Jack, Dominic, Theo, and Easton. I love spending time with my kids (Kristen and Dave) and their families and also with my brother and three sisters. We can have a great time together even if we're not really doing anything! My passion (after education, of course!) is Penn State Football. There's nothing better that a Saturday afternoon at Happy Valley!

Life doesn't get much better than this: Principal of SLS.

Lynne Kucenski- Preschool

I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education from Clarion University. My husband Dave and I have four children: Sara, Leah, Joseph, and Holly. Holly attends St. Leo School and Joseph attends ECCHS. Leah and Sara have moved on to college. I enjoy walking, going to camp, ice skating, knitting, and anything that has to do with the Cursillo movement. In addition to teaching 3, 4, and 5 year olds, I also coach St. Leo's Cheerleading. Although I have enjoyed many different positions, 8 years ago I landed the job of a lifetime. It was right here at St. Leo's.

Katie Sobieski- Kindergarten

I graduated from Clarion University with a degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. I taught first grade in Virginia for three years and have been teaching kindergarten at St. Leo's for five years. I am very thankful for the opportunity to teach in a private school where I have the freedom to teach children about God. I am passionate about children’s literature and enjoy teaching children how to read. I live in Saint Marys with my husband, Henry, and my cat, Rocco. In my free time I enjoy singing, playing the guitar, hiking, taking pictures of nature, reading and spending time with my family and friends.

Jeanne Gustitus- First Grade

I have been teaching first grade at St. Leo's School since 1996. I am proud to say SLS is my home away from home and second family! I am a graduate of Central Christian High School in DuBois and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from the Pennsylvania State University. I have two wonderful daughters, Ashley and Kara. Ashley is a Penn State graduate and lives in East Boston, MA and Kara is currently living and working in Pittsburgh. I enjoy spending time outdoors with my two dogs, Chunk and Bentley, gardening, and going for walks.

Nikki Slattery- Second Grade

I am a 2010 graduate of Clarion University with a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education.  I also hold certifications in the areas of mid-level math, mid-level English, and secondary English.  I have been a substitute teacher for the past 4 years in local schools and am happy to be able to call St. Leos my home!  I am originally from Brockway and now live in Brockport with my husband, Bryan, and my cat, Boof.  Outside of teaching I enjoy the outdoors (especially camping), traveling, sewing, and sports.  I love the Pirates and Steelers, and of course, our local sports teams!  I have had a great first few weeks here at SLS and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year holds!

Mary Sue Stanisch- Third Grade

I am a graduate of Edinboro University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education, as well as a Master's Equivalency. I have also received certification in Library Science and ESL (English as a Second Language).

My first teaching position was here at St. Leo School, where I taught eighth grade for one year and third grade for seven years. I have also held teaching positions in other area schools, as well as for Seneca Highlands IU9. It is wonderful to be back at SLS!!

I live in St. Marys with my husband, Steve, and our two children, Jacob and Lindsay. My hobbies include walking, reading, watching Pittsburgh Pirate baseball, and flower and herb gardening.

Katie Gerber- Fourth Grade

I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education, as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Resources. I have also received certification in middle school Science.

Before teaching here at St. Leo’s, I had been substituting locally for two years. I am a life-long resident of Ridgway, where my husband Curt and I raise our three beautiful children Josie, Lydia, and Hank. Josie is in second grade and Lydia attends Pre-K here at St. Leo's.

In my free time, I love to take walks, spend time on the farm, antique shop, and take pictures. I am grateful for the opportunity St. Leo's has given me, to be able to call it, my home away from home! SLS Rocks!
